Atlas Backyard Sheds Celebrates 40 Years
Tyler, TX (September 28, 2021) Atlas Backyard Sheds celebrates its 40th anniversary this year as the leading storage shed manufacturer and outdoor living construction company in Texas.
The company was founded by Bill and Shirley Downs in March of 1981 in Tyler, Texas. Early on, Atlas primarily did wholesale, with a single sales lot in Tyler. Over the years, they expanded throughout the East Texas area and eventually into the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex with the addition of a Dallas sales lot in 1996.
“At 16 years old, I built, sold, and delivered buildings. It was just my dad, mom, uncle and myself working together,” said William Downs, Chief Executive Officer and President of Atlas Backyard Sheds “As time went on, we hired other employees, but we remained a small family owned company.”
Since then, the company has grown to nearly 60 employees with nine sales locations across Texas, including two world-class showrooms in Tyler and Plano.
Downs said, “Every company is only as good as the people that work within it. You grow a company by treating your employees well and they will, in turn, make your company.”
In addition to storage sheds, over the last four decades Atlas has expanded its product selection to include tiny homes, cabins, greenhouses, decks, fences, arbors, hot tubs, and swim spas, among other types of outdoor living products.
In 2009, the company added a hot tub division, Atlas Spas and Swim Spas, an official dealer of Master Spas hot tubs and swim spas, including the Michael Phelps Signature Swim Spas. For seven consecutive years, Atlas has been a Master Spas’ APEX Dealer Award winner, awarded for the highest levels of accomplishment in achievement, performance and excellence.
The company prides itself in putting a high priority on service. When customers need something, there is always an employee ready to answer the call and take care of whatever it is.
“I believe that we ran the company to the best of our ability all these years, and we'll still keep on doing it as long as we're able. We do it with care, we care about the people, and we care about the products,” said Downs. “We have integrity along the way, and we do it to where we can be proud and make others proud.”
To celebrate the company’s 40th anniversary, Downs invested in the opportunity for his employees to go through the Legacy Letter Challenge. This will give each person the resources to write a well written and meaningful legacy letter to their children.
