A tribute to our Founder, William “Bill” F. Downs, Sr.
We are forever grateful to Bill for two decades of leadership and a passion for building the best quality sheds in Texas. He was born with humble roots in a small Texas town in the midst of the Great Depression. After he graduated from high school, he joined the U.S. Army for three years, during which he served overseas in Germany. He was a natural entrepreneur and over the course of his life, he started numerous businesses; some which were very successful, while others failed. After a few years of working as a builder for a portable building company, he decided to venture out on his own. With a vision and determination, he started a business that would offer a new life and opportunity for his family. In 1981, Atlas Portable Buildings was established, and quickly became a leader in the storage shed industry. Today, over three decades later, the company is stronger than ever and serves as a lasting legacy of Bill.
My father was, is and always will be a good man. Hope that you and gramma (Emma), sister (Kimberly) and my son (Daniel) are having the best of times watching over all of us.
Love you dad,
My Grandpa was one of the most genuine, kindest men I have ever known that never met a stranger. He was a friend to everyone, and would have given the shirt off his back to help someone. I have so many memories with him that I will cherish for the rest of my life. I miss my Grandpa more every day and can’t wait to see him again some day in Heaven. I only wish he could have met his beautiful Great Granddaughter, but I will tell her all about him.
I have a couple of favorite memories! My first being one time when I was younger I was at grandma and grandpas house swimming and I dared grandpa to jump in and he did clothes and all! One of my favorite pictures with him! My second favorite memory was a continuous thing that happened almost every week after I came home from school and went to their house and made him mozzarella cheese sticks and he helped me cook scrambled eggs!
I am happy to be part of this very successful company Bill began some 30 years ago. I love my job and love being a part of the Atlas team. I wish I could of had the pleasure of meeting him personally, but through the Downs family and this company his legacy lives on. May he rest in peace.
I didn’t have the opportunity to meet him but I’m sure he was a good man the way he was has reflected on his son and grandsons. You know he’s up there looking down here and seeing how amazing you all are. Thanks again for the help that you all have given us.
I had the pleasure of starting to work for Atlas a few months before Bill left us. By this time it was not possible to really know him except through how he raised his son William. Working with William is a testament to the person that Bill was. I have never met a man that is more fair and generous than William. I could continue on with the many things that I have witnessed, but it is much better watching.
He was loved by all that knew him. He was a wonderful person that I loved like a dad. He would do anything for anyone.
Aw, I miss him so much!!!!!! He was an amazing man! Such a great example!
